At the inaugural meeting of the GWG on 16th March, 2006, held in the Maintenance Workshops of Rhodes University, Andy Hatting demonstrated the turning of a table lamp from wild olive wood and the making of wall clocks. Those who attended were presented with useful gifts generously donated by A.N. White and D & A Timbers.

The April meeting was held at Garth Cambray's workshop in the Makana Meadery at the Old Power Station. Garth and Mbongeni Ntantiso demonstrated sawing of large pieces of timber.

In May, Chris Terry hosted the group at his immaculate workshop and demonstrated sharpening techniques and displayed some unusual handtools.

The June meeting was in another immaculate workshop, this time in the Rhodes Education Department, and Andrew Stevens described the construction and use of a whole range of woodworking jigs.

In July, Andrew Tracey and Chris Carver, gave a fascinating demonstration of wooden musical instruments at the African Musical Instruments factory, cr. Jarvis and Cloncore streets.
In August, Koekoe Jonker dealt with the making of miniature furniture and of dolls houses. Ernie Farnham also showed his miniature metal work, which included tiny pots, pans and kettles made from copper.

In September, members were treated to demonstrations of Hitachi power tools and Rystix coatings, kindly arranged by Jamie Sholto-Douglas of Pennypinchers. The meeting was held at the Albany Club in High Street and special offers were available, as were samples of the coatings. Members were also treated to excellent refreshments.
Billy de Klerk demonstrated bowl turning at the October meeting at his workshop and displayed a variety of his turned items. A highlight of this meeting was the interaction and discussion of techniques involving other experienced bowl turners, Andrew Stevens and Chris Terry.

The final meeting for the year was in November and Buff McLean showed the use of a router in making wooden signs and gave many useful tips for the general use of routers. The programme for 2007 was discussed.
