The MARCH meeting was a discussion of "Sanders, sandpapers and sanding techniques" led by Rob Moss and Andy Hatting.

There were many contributions and much discussion from Members. It is not easy to keep a record of this type of meeting, but some photos are given below.

On 17 March the annual HOBBIES FAIR was held in the Masonic Hall, Hill Street. As usual, some of the Grahamstown Woodworkers exhibited their work and demonstrated woodturning and scrollsawing.

The APRIL meeting was a demonstration of artistic hollow turning by Ashwin Ramhith, one of South Africa's top woodturners. Ashwin is now based in Port Elizabeth and his demonstrations are always something to look forward to. He last demonstrated to us in April 2009.

Ashwin began by giving some very constructive criticisms of turned bowls bravely brought by Rob Moss. These comments were very valuable to everyone, as were Ashwin's estimates of the prices to be expected for such work.

Ashwin then displayed some of his own pieces before demonstrating the turning of a deep hollow-form bowl from slightly wet jacaranda. He decorated the outside with a texturing tool and burnt some bands on it. Hollowing out the bowl was followed with great interest by the audience and with his flair for showmanship (?) we were shown what can happen if you thin the walls too much! The result was a rather large "serviette ring" and a much shorter bowl! Along the way Ashwin carefully explained the tools that he was using and his comments on some of the chisels were much blunter than the chisel - some of which were described as "c--p" and this did not stand for "cheap"!

We look forward to a promised future visit by Ashwin when he will show how woodwork can be enhanced with artistic decoration.

In MAY we had a visit from Strand Hardware from Port Elizabeth. André Esterhuyze demonstrated the making of frame and panel doors using rail and stile router bits. He also spoke about wood movement and how to compensate for it in construction.

Gerard Wong set up a display of some items available from Strand and members were able to buy at a discount. The evening was a bit disrupted by a power outage, which fortunately did not last too long.

The JUNE meeting was a demonstration of scroll sawing by our "country member" Godfrey Howes from Port Alfred.

He demonstrated how to cut out chess pieces in three dimensions and also the making of 3-D Christmas decorations. He also completed a basket-work box and brought some of his very intricate scroll work to display.

It was a wonderful opportunity to see a top expert in action on his top-of-the-range Hegner scroll saw.

The AUGUST meeting was a demonstration of spindle turning by Andrew Stevens. Andrew is a regular demonstrator at the symposia of the Association of Woodturners of South Africa (AWSA). Using the Group's small Jet lathe he demonstrated the use of the basic turning chisels in forming fillets, coves and beads. He then put these exercises into practice in turning a coffee table leg from a square-sectioned piece of oregon pine.Andrew paid a lot of attention to the use of skew chisels and showed how to achieve an outstanding finish without the need for sanding. He also showed how to turn an oval hammer handle using offset centres. He ended his demonstration by showing how to set up a piece of log and get it ready for further turning.

The OCTOBER meeting was a presentation by Dr Graeme van der Meer, Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist practising at Settlers' Hospital, on DEALING WITH DUST AND NOISE.

This topic is so important that it is given a separate page.

FINAL MEETING FOR 2012 AND AGM

The final meeting of the year, which included the AGM, was held on November 13th at Rob Moss’s farm.

At the AGM the existing committee was re-elected. Chris Terry wished to stand down as Chairperson and a replacement will be decided upon at the first meeting of the new committee in 2013. Members were asked to submit their ideas to the committee for topics for meetings and for use of the Group's accumulating finances.

Members had brought along donations of toys, books and other items for the Hospice Shop. David Barker thanked the Group for their continuing support of Hospice. Rodney Scheepers generously donated a collection of tools which were auctioned by Peter Breetzke and the proceeds resulted in funds for both Hospice and the Group.

During the braai that followed Patty Zipp ran her Lucky Draw with prizes generously donated by Buco, Pennypinchers, Wallace's Pharmacy, Vineyard Liquor Store, Buddy's Liquor Store and Albany Sports Shop. Almost everyone ended up with a prize.

The Woodworkers are really grateful to the Mosses for hosting the event and for supplying braai fires and delicious salads.

In the days after the meeting the toys were distributed by Hospice and the books and other donated items were placed in the Hospice Shop in Bathurst Street.

The photos below were kindly supplied by Andy Hatting, David Barker and Carl-Heinz Queisser.
