Grahamstown Woodworkers
Highlights from 2010

The first meeting of the year was on Tuesday February 9 in the Workshop of the Albany Museum, by kind permission of the Museum Director. The meeting was a series of "show and tell" presentations by members.

In the first presentation, Billy de Klerk described the construction of a wooden cot for his first grandchild.

On Saturday June 5 there was the annual get together with our Lower Albany colleagues at the Bathurst Agricultural Museum. There was a good turnout from the GWG.

The June meeting was at the workshop of Rowanwood in Dundas Street. Rowan Engelbrecht spoke about his work and demonstrated some interesting machines, including a large lathe.

There was no meeting in July but some members ran a stall on the Village Green at the National Arts Festival.

At the August meeting three of the members described their Festival experiences and gave some good advice on selling your wooden products. Rob Moss also demonstrated how to make cabriole legs for tables.

The very sad news is that Eric Tasmer passed away on Saturday 28 August after heart surgery.

The September meeting was a demonstration of how to get the best out of your table saw by Andre Esterhuyze and Brian Jolly from Strand Hardware in Port Elizabeth.

A record attendance, including colleagues from LAWG, also enjoyed Andre's demo on turning pens and being shown the pen turning kits available from Strand Hardware.

At an additional meeting in September (22nd) Piet Smith from Pretoria and his expert assistant, Charlie, demonstrated the turning of peppermills.

The October meeting was a demonstration of woodworking jigs by Chris Terry and Andrew Stevens.

In general the talk was about the reasons for making jigs, the materials used and the hardware available (handles, knobs, T nuts etc).

A number of jigs, which illustrated points made in the discussion or which people would probably find useful in their own work, were shown.

A more detailed illustrated description is available.

In November, a brief AGM was followed by a fascinating talk on "The Trials and Tribulations of a Modelmaker" by Grahamstown expert, Robin Stobbs. Robin is busy on a contract to build ship models for the Zanzibar Museum and he brought examples with him, as shown in the photos below.
